Walaa Alshaer (b. Egypt) is a freelance documentary photographer, videographer, graphic designer, and arts teacher based in the United Arab Emirates. Since 2013, she has worked on several long-term multimedia projects with various international NGOs in Africa and Asia, as well as on numerous self-directed photo series, from orphanage communities in Uganda, to displaced communities in Bangladesh and Türkiye, to coalfield communities in India.
What unites her work is a common interest in portraying both the life stories and interior lives of the people she meets, focusing on the deeper emotional and psychological aspects of the larger socioeconomic and environmental issues affecting them. Her series have helped tell some of their stories with such outlets as NPR, The Guardian UK, The Los Angeles Review of Books, in addition to her ongoing arts and cultural coverage for AFP. She served as an official, in-house documentarian for COP28 UAE and Expo 2020 Dubai.
